American agricultural firm Cargill announced plans Tuesday to invest $18 million in expansion of storage and unload capabilities at its Gibbon, NE grain elevator, adding upright storage space for 2 million bushels of grain and boosting the site’s unload capacity to 65,000 bushels/hr.

“The Gibbon site features high-production, mostly irrigated farm ground that historically produced consistently high yields. We’re excited to expand our capabilities and improve service to growers in the area,” said Jim Reiff, Northwest commercial leader of Cargill’s Agricultural Supply Chain in North America, in a statement.

Cargill said the site’s position on a Union Pacific mainline rail enables the facility to serve markets in the U.S. Gulf, California and Pacific Northwest regions, as well as Mexico.

The facility employs eight workers and handles corn, soybeans, and wheat.

“These improvements are in line with our growth strategy and ensure we can continue to provide a competitive offering to Cargill customers,” David Baudler, grain managing director for Cargill’s Agricultural Supply Chain in North America, said in a company press release. “The upgrades in Gibbon will have a positive impact on both long and local supply chains.”

Completion of the project is slated for early 2019.
