Swiss flavors and fragrances company Firmenich is growing its presence in Africa with the acquisition of South African flavorings producer Flavourome, a press release announced Wednesday.

“The Sub-Saharan Africa region, with its population of 800 million, represents a strategic growth market for Firmenich,” the chairman of the firm’s board, Patrick Firmenich, said in a statement. “As Firmenich has been operating in South Africa for 30 years, this acquisition is a natural extension of our commitment to building long-lasting customer relationships in the region.”

Based in Midrand, South Africa, Flavourome produces liquid and powder sweet flavor solutions, coloring products, vitamins, premixes, and other solutions, according to the firm’s website. The company also operates a Savoury Division that offers products to African producers of snack, meat, soup, and instant meal products.

The transaction includes a manufacturing plant for powdered and liquid flavor solutions in Midrand.

“We are proud to have developed strong relationships with leading food companies in South Africa over the years that have supported our commitment to innovation and service. I am also tremendously grateful to all the Flavourome employees who have fueled our success,” said Flavourome Chief Executive Officer David Wright in the Firmenich release.

Firmenich expects the sale to close by March 2018 pending regulatory approvals.
