Responding to a shift in consumer toward foods with lower levels of salt, American agribusiness Cargill announced Monday that the firm’s first food-grade potassium chloride production facility opened in Watkins Glen, NY.

Located at the firm’s existing salt plant, Cargill said the investment in new production capabilities will help bring its lower sodium potassium chloride products to market more quickly.

“Many consumers are looking to lower their sodium consumption. As a result, our customers are asking for more reduced-sodium options. By expanding our potassium chloride manufacturing capabilities, we increase the availability of lower sodium foods without sacrificing taste and functionality,” the president of Cargill’s salt group, Marcelo Montero, said in a statement.

Manufacturers of food products can lower the sodium content in certain food products by as much as 50% by using potassium chloride, according to Cargill.

Cargill’s plant in Watkins Glen has operated for more than four decades.
