American mining company Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. plans to hold a ribbon cutting event on August 7 to mark the startup of its revamped Northshore Mining iron ore processing plant in Silver Bay, MN, the firm announced in a release Thursday.
Investing about $100 million in the project, Cleveland-Cliffs installed new production equipment and conveying systems in the facility, upgraded the site’s concentrator building, and added a new scavenger building, a limestone tank, and steam generating plant. The expanded assets will support the firm’s production of DR-grade iron ore pellets.
When the Silver Bay plant becomes operational, the site will be the only iron ore processing plant in the U.S. that can manufacture low silica DR-grade pellets. Materials produced in the Northshore Mining facility will be used as feedstock in Cleveland-Cliffs’ Toledo, OH hot briquetted iron plant, which is slated for commissioning in mid-2020.
Pellets will also be exported to some international DRI producers.
